Bonang (Terengganu Gamelan)

Bonang or kromong consists of ten small knobbed gongs of different pitches arranged in two rows on hanged cords over a rectangular frame. Bonang is an  idiophone instrument which is played by beating the knobbed by two cloth padded wooden beaters. The row of gongs nearer the player ascend from left to right while the upper row from right to left. Like the gambang, the bonang elaborates the main melodic line and is played in octaves, one note at a time. The first note either anticipates the main beat with the second note played on the beat or the first note on the beat and the second after it.

Figure: Bonang gongs.
