Gambang (Terengganu Gamelan)

Gambang is an idiophone instrument which is best describe as a wooden xylophone. The only idiphone instrument in the ensemble that is not made out of bronze or metal. It is four octave long, consisting of twenty graduated wooden keys laid on a trough-like structure. A pair of sticks known as the mallet is used to strike the keys. A gambang function is similar to Saron Pekin, which act as an elaborating instrument, ornamenting the melodic line of Saron Barung at double the speed, and striking the two notes simultaneously or alternately, an octave apart. Gambang need not to be damp because it is considered as the soft instrument compared with others in the ensemble.
